Cleaning Your Running Shoes

Things You’ll Need:
  • Dishwashing liquid Baking soda Baby wipes Old toothbrush Rag Newspaper
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Baking soda
  • Baby wipes
  • Old toothbrush
  • Rag
  • Newspaper
Step 1
Remove the shoe laces and put them in the washing machine with your next load.
Step 2
Stuff the shoes with scrunched up newspaper. This prevents the insides of the shoes from getting too wet, helps them hold their shape and makes it easier to apply pressure to the outside of the shoes when cleaning them.
Step 3
Fill a basin with hot water and a generous squirt of dishwashing liquid. Saturate a rag, squeeze out the excess water and use this to scrub the outer parts of the shoes, the tongue and the sole. Rinse the rag often.
Step 4
Use the toothbrush with the hot soapy water to scrub all the awkward parts of the shoes, like the soles and the groove details around the sides.
Step 5
Let the shoes dry, then examine them. If you still see any dirty spots, use a baby wipe to rub the dirt or stains away. Remove the newspaper from inside the shoes.
Step 6
Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda into each shoe and shake them gently so that it settles in a thin layer over the insole. Let this sit for 12 to 24 hours, then tap the baking powder out. Use a vacuum attachment to remove any excess powder, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

If baby wipes don't satisfactorily remove dirt or stains, try a kitchen cleaning wipe instead.

Do not submerge the shoes in water. Some water on the surface is OK but a soaking could distort the fit--a vital factor when it comes to foot support.
