How to Use a Pocket Knife Can Opener

Most models of the Swiss Army knife (and many other pocket knives besides) have a tool for opening cans. The odd thing is how many owners of these knives have no idea how to use that tool, or even what it is for. While awkward, the pocket knife can opener is compact, and compactness is a major virtue for backpacking hikers everywhere.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step 1
Draw out the can opening tool. This is the one that looks similar to the bottle opener and standard head screwdriver tool, except that the side of the head is curved and has a sharp blade.
Step 2
Place the bottom notch of the can opener on the outside of the can's lip. Then place the top part with the blade inside and against the side of the lip.
Step 3

Push down with the blade so that the bottom notch remains secure against the outside of the can lid. The blade will cut right through the lid of the can.
Step 4
Reposition the knife so that the blade is set to cut a new section of lid. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until enough of the lid has been cut away to pry open the lid of the can.

Tips & Warnings

As with any sharp implement, use caution with the blade.
