Scallops are tender and succulent meats from bay waters or the sea. Its meat is an excellent source of nutrition. It is also an adventure to harvest them yourself using a kayak and diving gear.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Kayak and paddle
  • Dive mask
  • Snorkel
  • Gloves
  • Dive flag
  • Dive/scallop bag
Step 1
Paddle your kayak to the desired location on the water. Scallops feed on sea grass so look for areas with plenty of sea grass and avoid open sandy spots. Look for waters with healthy currents. Water current aids in bringing scallops food.
Step 2
Put on your dive mask, snorkel and gloves. Display your dive flag visibly and securely by attaching it to the kayak.
Step 3
Dive into the water with the scallop bag and descend to the bottom. Swim in a smooth and calm manner to avoid stirring up silt, which can diminish your ability to see.
Step 4
Once you find the scallops, pick them off the rocks one by one and place them into your bag. Leave the smaller scallops to give them time to grow larger.
Step 5
Swim up and put the scallop bag inside the kayak.
Step 6
Carefully crawl on top of your kayak to avoid flipping it when you are finished scalloping.

Tips & Warnings

Check local regulations regarding scallop harvesting before venturing out.
