How to Turn Wooden Fishing Lures

How to Turn Wooden Fishing Lures
There are a wide variety of lures with different sizes, shapes and colors. To save money and to experiment with different colors and shapes, you make your own wooden fishing lures on a lathe. Start by duplicating a commercially manufactured lure model and then start designing your own styles.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Wood block
  • Lathe
  • Lure model
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood turning tools
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Awl
  • Screw eyes
  • Treble hooks
  • Pliers
Step 1
Position the wood blocks on the lathe.
Step 2
Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the length you want to make on the wood block based on your lure model. This will enable you to tell where both ends would be.
Step 3
Start the lathe and shape your wood block with the use of the wood-turning tools. Shape the wood similar to the lure you are using as a model.
Step 4
Use sandpaper to sand out the lure as it is turning so that the shape becomes smooth.
Step 5
Cut the finished wood off from the rest of the block and take out any excess parts with the saw.
Step 6
Use the paint and paint brush to add color to the lure, and let the paint dry.
Step 7
Make three holes using the awl. Make two at intervals along the lure's body and one at its tail end.
Step 8
Insert a closed screw eye into the face of the plug and the three open screw eyes into the holes you just made.
Step 9
Hang the three treble hooks on the open screw eyes.
Step 10
Close the open screw eyes with the pliers.
