How to Disassemble a Penn Reel

Basic maintenance procedures are needed to keep your Penn fishing reel functioning properly. This will also ensure that your gear lasts much longer. With just a few steps, you can disassemble your Penn fishing reel to clean, lubricate or replace the parts inside.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Penn reel
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
Step 1
Turn the handle's bearing cover counterclockwise and pull it out. Unscrew all of the screws on the side of the reel and remove the reel handle.
Step 2
Remove the drag knob assembly by twisting the knob counterclockwise. Lift the three washers on the spool once the knob is detached.
Step 3
Lift up the reel and remove the spool. Take out the washers and the circular drive plate.
Step 4
Unscrew the drag cover from the reel.
Step 5
Take out the bail wire assembly by unscrewing all the screws.
Step 6
Remove the nut with the wrench and take out the gear post.
Step 7
Detach the reel bail with the screwdriver and dislodge it from the Penn reel.
