How to Fix a Rubber Kayak Hatch

If you have a crack or split in the rubber kayak hatch, there is no good way to fix it permanently. However, if you are stuck out on the water and can't get a replacement, there is a way to do a quick fix. This will keep the water out until you finish your trip and can order another hatch. It can be done with one simply item.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Wipe off the hatch to get rid of as much excess water as you can.
Step 2
Take the tape out of its plastic storage bag and cut strips. You will cut several strips depending on the size of the split. Cut them one at a time as you need them, and make sure they are longer than the problem area. The tape is kept in a plastic bag because it is so sticky. This way it won't stick to other supplies.
Step 3
Apply the tap to the hatch, over the crack. Press the tape down to seal it. Smooth out any air bubbles as you go.
Step 4
Overlap other pieces of tape, working across the problem area. This will make sure there are no exposed areas.
Step 5
Cut more strips and apply to the inside of the hatch to seal it from the other side as well.
