How to Seal an RV Air Conditioner

RV air conditioners require general maintenance to prevent leaks. If leakage occurs in an air conditioner that has been installed for some time, you'll need to seal the unit with a rubber compression gasket. Placing the gasket between the roof of the RV and the air conditioner is a moderately easy process that requires just a few simple tools and a moderate amount of caution. The air conditioner will most likely be secured to the roof of the RV, so ask a friend to assist you if necessary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • New gasket
Step 1
Power down the air conditioner.
Step 2
Unscrew the air conditioner cover with a screwdriver. Switch to a socket wrench to remove the nuts and mounting bolts on the air conditioner. Slide the air conditioner out.
Step 3
Remove the old compression gasket, which is located on the bottom of the air conditioner. Position the new gasket on the bottom of the unit and place the air conditioner back down on the roof of the RV. Screw the nuts on the mounting bolts back in with the socket wrench. Tighten completely.
Step 4
Replace the cover for the air conditioner and tighten the screws securely.
Step 5
Turn on the power to the air conditioner.

Tips & Warnings

Use a gasket to seal an air conditioner and RV putty tape to seal doors, windows and roof vents.

Turn off the circuit for the air conditioner prior to sealing it.
