Abu Garcia reels were first introduced after World War II. A Swedish company, Abu Garcia soon made a name for itself with innovative designs and quality construction. Today, Abu Garcia reels incorporate modern materials to provide anglers with durable and easy to use equipment. Maintaining your Abu Garcia is important to ensure its continued operation. With only a few items, it is possible for anglers to maintain their reels properly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Small screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Reel oil
Step 1
Remove the handle assembly from the side of your Abu Garcia reel by loosening and removing the retaining nut. Use an adjustable wrench to remove the nut.
Step 2
Apply a few drops of reel oil to the mount that holds the handle assembly in place. Remove the handle from the assembly with a screwdriver, and apply a drop of oil to the inside of the handle.
Step 3
Loosen and remove the small retaining screws on the side of the reel. Pull the handle assembly side of the reel completely free from the reel body. This will allow the spool and bearings to be accessed.
Step 4
Apply oil to the spool bearings, gears and spindle. Also take this opportunity to examine the internal parts of the reel for wear or damage.
Step 5
Assemble the reel by pushing the spool firmly in place. Secure the side plate to the reel, and install the small retaining screws. Assemble the handle to the handle assembly. Attach the handle assembly back to the side of the reel, and secure with a nut. Tighten the nut with the adjustable wrench.
