How to Open Shakespeare Fishing Reels

A Shakespeare fishing reel has to be properly maintained so it can last longer and continue to function smoothly. With a few steps, you can open the reel housing and remove the dirt and grime that can accumulate inside it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Shakespeare reel
Screwdriver

Step 1

Remove your Shakespeare reel from the rod by unscrewing its lock nut on the rod handle.

Step 2

Unscrew the two sides of screws that hold the bail to the reel. Set the bail aside along with the two side mounts.

Step 3

Turn the nut on the top of the spool until it detaches, then lift your line and spool from the steel spindle.

Step 4

Unscrew the knob on the opposite side of the reel handle and then pull it out of the reel.

Step 5

Take out the head screw at the bottom of the Shakespeare reel.

Step 6

Lift the rotating bail apart from the spindle. Take out the remaining screws on the reel to open it.

Tips & Warnings

Only take the reel apart on a clean level working surface. The small parts can be easily lost or damaged.

Replace all screws and tighten them properly when reassembling the reel.
