Like all mechanical devices, your Daiwa reel needs periodic and preventive maintenance in order to perform correctly. The angler can easily accomplish this maintenance--and it's also a good time to get rid of old fishing line and install fresh line. Spending a little time once a year to clean and lubricate your Daiwa reel will ensure that it provide years of reliable service.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Cotton swabs
  • Toothbrush
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Daiwa reel oil
  • New fishing line
Step 1
Dispose of the old fishing line on the reel. Separate the reel from the rod. Remove the spool by first turning the drag knob fully counterclockwise. Lift the spool away from the reel.
Step 2
Clean the spool with cotton swabs and a toothbrush that has been dipped in alcohol. Inspect the spool lip for any nicks or chips that could abrade the line.
Step 3
Clean the exterior of the reel and the spool seat area using cotton swabs and alcohol. Remove all grease, dirt and debris. Inspect the bail for nicks or damage. Make sure the line roller is clean and spins freely.
Step 4
Apply oil to the line roller and the bail bearing. Lubricate the drive gear bearing and the hinge points on the reel handle.
Step 5
Reassemble the reel and reattach to the rod. Check that the reel operates and functions correctly. Install new fishing line. Ensure the reel is covered while in storage to prevent dust and dirt accumulation.
