You can paint your fiberglass camper shell using a few simple steps. Prep work is required to ensure that the fiberglass is free of dirt and oil, and that the paint you use is applied for the most effective results. The process is moderately easy, but you must allow each application to sit as directed before proceeding to the next step. Once you choose a color for your camper, and all prep and sanding work is complete, you can paint the entire surface of the camper to obtain the look you want.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Car wash soap
  • Lint free towel
  • Wax
  • Degreaser
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • 300-grit sandpaper
  • Car paint
  • Automotive clear
Step 1
Remove dirt and grime from the camper. Wash and dry with a lint free towel.
Step 2
Add wax and a degreaser to the entire surface of the camper.
Step 3
Sand the entire surface of the camper with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand until smooth. Finish with a new coat of wax and a degreaser. Apply three even layers of primer; allow each coat to dry before adding the next.
Step 4
Use 300-grit sandpaper to sand the primer smooth.
Step 5
Apply at least four thin layers of car paint. Allow each layer to dry before adding a new layer to avoid buildup and beading.
Step 6
Finish by applying three coats of automotive clear, a product designed to prevent damage from the sun, scuffs and nicks.
