Homemade Bicycle Wall Racks

If you've got a bike (or two, or three), you may find yourself strapped for storage space. To protect your bike from accidental damage and to keep it handy and ready to ride, you'll want to find a simple and convenient way to store it. A wall rack is an excellent storage solution that is easy to build, inexpensive and doesn't take up a lot of room in your home or garage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Electronic stud finder
  • Pencil
  • 2-by-4-inch board
  • 3-1/2-inch wood screws
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch-drill bit
  • Screwdriver
  • 3-inch vinyl-covered utility hooks
Step 1
Run an electronic stud finder 6 feet up along the wall in the location where you want to install your wall rack. Make a mark on the wall with a pencil at the location of each stud.
Step 2
Place a 2-by-4-inch board 6 feet up on the wall and secure it to the studs behind the wall with two 3-1/2-inch wood screws at each stud location. To make it easier to screw the board into the studs, drill a 1/8-inch-diameter pilot hole with a drill through the board in the spots where you'll be screwing in the wood screws. The board should be long enough to accommodate the number of bicycles you'll be hanging on the rack--allow about 28 inches for each bike.
Step 3
Screw a 3-inch vinyl-covered utility hook into the board, one for each bicycle. Place the hooks at least 28 inches apart.
Step 4
Hang your bikes on the rack by suspending each bike's front wheel from the hook. The bike will hang with the front of the bike facing the ceiling and the rear wheel touching the wall near the floor.
