How to Cook With Propane Burners

How to Cook With Propane Burners

Wikimedia Commons

Propane burner camp stoves are handy devices that can turn almost any open-air space into a kitchen that is just as convenient as that of any recreational vehicle or trailer. They are especially popular with tailgate campers, owners of remote cabins and even some backpackers value an easy hot meal as worth hauling the extra weight. Cooking with a propane burner is as simple as knowing how to set up and operate one.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Propane stove with matching tank
  • Propane stove with matching tank
Step 1
Check the regulator to make sure it is in the off position.
Step 2
Position the propane tank under the stove's valve and screw it in. Some large propane tanks and stoves are connected by screwing on a hose and securing it by twisting a tightening lever.
Step 3
Place the propane tank into its stand, if there is one.
Step 4
Turn the regulator back to the on position. To light the stove, press the starter button, or if there is none, light the burner with a match.
Step 5
Adjust the heat using the regulator's on/off control.
Step 6
Cook over the burner as you would a normal kitchen burner.
Step 7
Turn the burner off by returning the regulator to the off position.

Tips & Warnings

Keep an eye on the burner flame. A bad regulator or nearly empty propane tank might cause it to sputter.

Place the stove on a stable, level surface. It is easy to tip over an unstable stove with a heavy skillet or pot, especially propane camp stoves that have a tower-like shape.
