Homemade Catfish Punch Bait

Catfish punch bait is similar to catfish stink bait, but it is applied to hooks differently than regular stink bait. When using punch bait, a treble hook already attached to the fishing line is placed on the surface of the bait and then pushed or punched down into the bait with a stick. When the hook is pulled out of the bait by the fishing line, it will bring a large glob of the bait with it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Processed cheese
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • 2 packages sardines
  • Food processor
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2 to 3 cups oats
  • Plastic container with lid
Step 1
Place one pound of processed cheese such as Velveeta in a large microwave safe bowl.
Step 2
Microwave the cheese on high power for approximately five minutes or until the cheese has melted.
Step 3
Chop two 3.75-oz. packages of sardines in a food processor or blender. The sardines do not need to be liquefied, just coarsely chopped.
Step 4
Stir the sardines into the melted cheese.
Step 5
Add four minced garlic cloves to the melted cheese and sardine mixture.
Step 6
Stir two cups of oats into the cheese mixture.
Step 7
Let the punch bait rest on the counter until the cheese has cooled to room temperature. If the bait seems thin, add an additional cup of oats, and stir it up.
Step 8
Transfer the punch bait to a plastic container with a lid. Store the punch bait in the refrigerator until it is needed.

Tips & Warnings

If your catfish punch bait seems too thin or watery, refrigerate it until it firms up.
