How to Get the Best Hotel Rates

Regardless of whether you're looking to travel during peak seasons, or the off season, discounted hotel rates are always available, so you can get the most out of your money. Finding the best hotel rates is all about searching and shopping around. The best places to search are reputable travel agency sites, coupon sites, and sometimes official hotel chain sites.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Inquire with the hotel of your choice directly. All hotels have a direct connection to a reservation department or a toll-free number available for contacting their customer service center. Corporate rates, and rates for AAA members and senior citizens are offered at nearly every hotel. Some hotels also offer discounted rates for group reservations.
Step 2
Visit reputable travel agency sites on-line. Sites like HotWire.com, Expedia.com, and Kayak.com offer discounted hotel rates on excess rooms that the hotel has not booked.
Step 3
Bid on hotel rates on-line. Bidding gives you the ability to have sole control over the amount you spend, per night for a hotel room. This amenity is offered through priceline.com.
Step 4
Sign up as preferred guest for a reputable hotel chain. Hotel chains like Starwood Hotels, InterContinental, and Hilton Hotels send rate specials, and booking promotions, via email and physical mailing address on a weekly basis. These offers usually give you at least 30 to 60 days to take advantage of their offers and book reservations.

Tips & Warnings

Booking ahead usually ensures an excellent chance of getting the best rates available, but last minute deals can also be beneficial. When most hotels do not book all of their rooms for specified dates or weekends, the rates have a tendency to drop so the hotel can get the most out of their availability. In other words, something's better than nothing. Therefore, prices may be relatively lower than usual.

Be aware that hotels usually provide only the nightly rate for your stay. This estimate will not include incidental cost that will be held on your credit card at the time of check-in, nor does it include the hotel's daily parking rate. Incidentals may range from $50.00 for the duration of the stay, or up to $50.00 per night you have reserved. Parking rates can be anywhere from $11.00 to $25.00 a night, depending on the caliber and star-rating of the hotel. Make sure you inquire about these cost before booking.
