How to Check the Status of a Passport Application

When you travel to most foreign countries, you need to have a passport to enter the country you're visiting. Even if the country you are visiting does not require a passport, you need one to reenter the United States. After you have applied, it can take several weeks before your passport application is processed and approved. You can check the status of your passport application online or over the phone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Wait about a week after applying before checking the status of your passport application because, according to the U.S. State Department, it takes between five and seven days for a passport application to be entered into the computer.
Step 2
Gather your identifying information, including your name, your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.
Step 3
Enter your identifying information in the form at the U.S. Passport Application Status Check website (see the Resources section), and then click "Submit." The status of your application should appear momentarily.
Step 4
Call (877) 487-2778 to check your passport application status if you are unable to enter or uncomfortable with entering your identifying information online. Representatives are on call on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. EST.
