How to Book a Hotel Room Without a Credit Card

You don't have to have a credit card to reserve a hotel room. You can use debit cards and even personal checks to make your reservation. You could also reserve a room simply by asking that the hotel waive any requirements for a bank card, which is called a "courtesy hold." The hotel will hold the room for you, as a courtesy, until a certain time on your day of arrival.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Consider Your Options

Things You’ll Need:
  • Telephone or Internet access Debit card or personal/business check
  • Telephone or Internet access
  • Debit card or personal/business check
Step 1
Decide how you want to secure your hotel room reservation -- by courtesy hold, check or debit card.
Step 2
Contact the hotel or hotel chain by telephone if you are considering a courtesy hold. Ask the hotel representative if a courtesy hold is possible. If the answer is yes, make the reservation by giving the required information such as your name and address, along with your date of arrival. Make note of the terms of the courtesy hold.
Step 3
Make your plans well in advance if you are thinking of using a personal or business check as a deposit. Contact the hotel as early as possible, preferably at least 30 days before check-in, and ask if the hotel allows payment in advance. If that is possible, proceed if you wish. Note the terms and follow the hotel's instructions to complete the reservation.
Step 4
Use your debit card to make the reservation online. Or use the telephone to call the hotel or the toll-free number for its reservations system. Provide the representative with all the needed information to book your stay.
