How to Get the Best Hotel Deals

How to Get the Best Hotel Deals
Finding a great hotel rate can be one of the more challenging aspects to traveling. Often, travelers find themselves paying high rates with bare amenities on the fringes of town. Bring down your rate considerably with some preparation, research and negotiating. Remember, though, that for travelers, location and certain amenities can be worth the higher rates.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step 1
Research the peak times of travel in the city or town in question. For resort towns, hotel prices might jump up during summer months. Weigh the benefits and disadvantages of traveling during off-months, and remain flexible with dates. Also, research how far away hotels are from the airport and attractions. Even a great rate can be offset by an inconvenient location, steep taxi expenses and wasted transportation time.
Step 2
Compare rates available online. Online vendors such as Expedia and Priceline offer promotional rates, in addition to packaging airline tickets with hotel rooms and car rentals. Also, look for vouchers and coupons, as well as any customer points you might have been awarded in the past. Many hotels also have senior, AAA and member discounts, so ask about any discounts not advertised.
Step 3
Call the hotel and discuss with a booking agent prices and packages. The hotel booking agent might be able to lower the rate or find a discount package for which you are qualified. Typically, your best negotiating leverage is available months in advance and in the few days before the vacation. Try negotiating at both times. Keep in mind that a frustrated or hurried tone can give the negotiating power back to an agent or hotel representative.
