How to Set the Correct Chain Length on Iron Horse Mountain Bikes

How to Set the Correct Chain Length on Iron Horse Mountain Bikes
Like other bikes, Iron Horse Mountain bikes need to be fitted with a chain of proper length. A chain that is too long will never shift efficiently, while a chain that is too short will not be able to access the full range of gear combinations. A general rule for chain length is that you should be able to shift the chain onto the largest rear sprocket and largest front chain ring simultaneously. This combination proves that your chain is long enough to access even the widest gear combination.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Chain removal tool
Step 1
Remove the old chain from your Iron Horse. Use the chain tool to tighten the chain tool pin over a rivet in the chain. Continue to tighten the pin until you drive the rivet from the chain. Separate the chain and pull it from the bike.
Step 2
Count the links on your old chain. If your old chain was of adequate length, this method works fine for sizing your new chain. If your old chain was not sized properly to begin with, or you don't have access to your old chain, proceed to the next step.
Step 3
Shift the front derailleur over the largest front chain ring, and shift the rear derailleur beneath the smallest cog.
Step 4
Pass the new chain through the front derailleur and wrap it over the largest rear cog. There is no need to pass it through the rear derailleur at this point.
Step 5
Pull the chain tight. Locate the nearest rivet where the two ends can meet. There must be an inner and outer plate for the chain to join.
Step 6
Count two links over from where the ends meet. To set the correct chain length, cut the chain here.
