How to Make a Camera Backpack

How to Make a Camera Backpack
Using a digital camera while climbing, hiking or participating in outdoor sports can get you great results, but it's a nerve-wracking experience to be carrying expensive gear in conditions that are sometimes hostile. A camera backpack is a rugged solution to this problem; making your own out of a standard sports backpack allows you to customize the size and usability of your bag.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Nylon backpack Bubble wrap Cardboard Waterproofing spray Seam sealant
  • Nylon backpack
  • Bubble wrap
  • Cardboard
  • Waterproofing spray
  • Seam sealant
Step 1
Purchase a nylon backpack. The piece should fit well, sitting evenly on your back with well-padded shoulder straps to distribute the weight. The bottom of the bag should be large enough to fit your camera and lens. If you are using a backpack which you already own, check the seams for weakness, fraying and rot.
Step 2
Seal the seams using the seam sealant. Follow the instructions on the bottle and allow the sealant to dry fully before proceeding.
Step 3
Spray the exterior of the backpack with waterproofing spray. This should be done in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside.
Step 4
Use bubble wrap to wrap the lens, allowing it to extend beyond the end of the lens to create a cylinder shape. This will create a template for the protective sleeve. Lay the bubble wrap on the cardboard and cut a piece of cardboard to match the bubble wrap.
Step 5
Assemble the protective sleeve by rolling the cardboard into a cylinder. Wrap the cylinder with bubble wrap and slide it over the lens. Insert the protected camera and lens into the backpack.
