3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Instructions

3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Instructions
Trunk mount bike racks are designed to be positioned on the flat top of the trunk and the sloping rear of the trunk. Available in different models, which can typically hold up to three bikes, trunk mount racks are a convenient solution for owners of cars who do not want to use receiver-mounted or roof-top racks. Manufacturers, including Yakima and Thule, produce quality racks which are user friendly and provide a secure means of transporting bikes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Vehicle with trunk
  • Trunk mount rack
Step 1
Adjust or attach any padding used on the metal frame to prevent damage to the car paint. Position pads so when you place bikes on the rack the weight will be evenly distributed on the padding.
Step 2
Open the three bike rack frame to an open position to mount it on your car. Refer to the manufacturer's directions for adjustable frames to determine the angle for positioning the frame. Tighten any adjustment knobs to lock the frame in place.
Step 3
Clean the trunk of the car with a mild soapy water solution to remove grit and any abrasive material. This is important to prevent the pads of the carrier from scratching the car paint when you load the bikes.
Step 4
Extend the forward connecting straps of the rack by lifting the buckle upward and sliding the nylon strap through the buckle. Repeat the steps to extend the lower connecting straps.
Step 5
Place the rack on the trunk of the car making sure it is centered from side to side. The lower support of the rack should rest at or just below the edge of the trunk lid. Follow manufacturers' recommendations for specific placement on some car models.
Step 6
Slightly open the trunk of the car and attach the forward support hooks to the front edge of the trunk. Pull the adjusting straps to remove slack but do not completely tighten. Repeat the process for the lower hooks by placing them under edge of the trunk lid.
Step 7
Adjust the forward and lower straps until the rack is centered front to back and side to side. Pull the adjustment straps tight to secure the rack to the car.

Tips & Warnings

Follow the manufacturer's directions for mounting bikes to the rack.

Make sure all straps are securely adjusted to prevent possibly damage to the car, bikes and rack.
