How to Take the Rear Tire Off of a Huffy Bike

How to Take the Rear Tire Off of a Huffy Bike
Rear tire removal constitutes one of the most basic bicycle repair skills. Fixing a flat tire, replacing your tire liner and putting on a new tire all require removal of your Huffy's rear tire. With a little practice, you will develop the ability to remove your rear tire in less than a minute.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Removing the Tire

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bicycle repair stand (optional)
  • 15 mm wrench
  • Set of tire levers
Step 1
Place the bike in a repair stand, or turn it upside down with wheels in the air so it rests on the seat and handlebars.
Step 2
If the rear wheel attaches with a quick-release lever, pry it open and lift the wheel out of the frame. If the wheel is bolted in, use your 15 mm wrench to loosen the nuts on either side of the frame and lift the wheel out. Remove the chain from the wheel's gear teeth, and fully remove it from the bike frame.
Step 3
Fully deflate the inner tube, then wedge a tire lever between the tire and the rim of the wheel. Pry the rubber away from the rim. Insert a second tire lever into the opening and slide it along the rim, separating an entire side of the tire from the rim.
Step 4
Remove the inner tube by pulling it up and out of the rim. Use another tire lever to pry the remaining side of the tire from the rim. Slide the lever along the rim to fully separate rim from tire.

Tips & Warnings

Insert the tire levers away from the air valve to avoid damaging the valve.

When sliding the tire irons along the rim, keep the inner tube and rim separated. Pinching can create holes and weak points in your inner tube.

Remove your off of roads or trails, and well away from traffic.
