How to Clean MBT Shoes

How to Clean MBT Shoes
Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT) shoes are designed to relieve pain in the feet and body by distributing the weight of your feet evenly across the soles of the shoes to create better body alignment. This alignment eases joint pain and tones leg and buttock muscles, according to the manufacturer of MBT shoes. The shoes use specially designed soles that contain sensors to distribute foot weight evenly. MBT shoes require special care to avoid damage to the sensors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Sponge
  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Liquid anti-bacterial hand soap
  • Towel
Step 1
Remove dirt spots from the interior and exterior of MBT shoes using a sponge moistened with soapy water made with liquid dish detergent. Rinse the sponge using clean water. Squeeze excess water from the sponge and wipe the soap off of the MBT shoes.
Step 2
Clean extremely dirty, muddy or smelly shoes by soaking them in a tub of soapy water for five minutes. Make the soapy water with liquid dish detergent or liquid anti-bacterial hand soap. The anti-bacterial hand soap is the better choice for removing odor from smelly shoes. Use a sponge to gently scrub dirt away from the shoes. Rinse the shoes in clean water to remove the soap.
Step 3
Set your MBT shoes upside down, with the soles facing upward, on a towel to dry. This position makes the water drain away from the sensors in the soles of the shoes, so that they are not damaged.
Step 4
Inspect the condition of the soles of the shoes. If the soles are separating from the body of the shoes or if they are showing signs of severe wear, contact a store that sells MBT shoes for a recommendation on where to have the shoes repaired. Walker's Warehouse, an MBT shoe retailer, warns that wearing MBT shoes with worn-out or damaged soles may potentially destroy the sensors in the shoes.

Tips & Warnings

Always dry your MBT shoes after using them in the rain or in any other occasion that exposes them to water to avoid damage to the sensors; use the drying instructions explained above.

Do not wash MBT shoes in a washing machine or with harsh detergents, or allow the sensors to remain wet for an extended period of time. Improper care of MBT shoes voids the manufacturer's warranty.
