How to Buy a Wetsuit for a Triathlon

How to Buy a Wetsuit for a Triathlon
The triathlon wetsuit serves two functions. First, it provides insulation to keep the athlete warm in cold water. Second, it provides a degree of flotation that assists the swimmer during their time in the water. The triathlon wetsuit is designed for swimming and shouldn't be confused with wetsuits made for surfing or scuba diving. Proper fit is the key element in purchasing a wetsuit for a triathlon. When purchasing a suit, you have two basic options--purchase one at a store or do it online or through a catalog.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Purchasing in a Store

Step 1
Only specialized stores that carry triathlon gear will carry triathlon wetsuits. You won't find them at large sporting goods stores. To find a shop in your area, check your local phone listings or ask at local bike shops; some of these carry gear for triathletes or can refer you to stores that do. Also check the websites of triathlon wetsuit manufacturers. They'll have lists of authorized dealers.
Step 2
Decide on the style you want. There are three basic styles of wetsuit. Full-sleeve wetsuits cover the entire body, arms and legs. Sleeveless cover the body and legs but don't have sleeves. "Shorty" wetsuits have no sleeves and only cover the upper part of the legs. Full suits provide the most flotation and insulation. If many of your swims will be in cold water, it's probably your best bet. If you live in a more temperate area, a sleeveless suit is a good choice. The "shorty" style is not as commonly used.
Step 3
Go to the store to be fitted for a wetsuit. The staff will be able to assist you, but keep in mind a properly fitted wetsuit will be snug in fit but still allow freedom of movement for the arms and shoulders.

Buying Online

Step 1
There are numerous triathlon gear shops online that carry wetsuits. Seek brand and price before making your decision. You might want to visit an online triathlon forum to ask the advice of those who have been down this road already.
Step 2
Make the decision of the type of suit you want.
Step 3
Measure yourself for the suit following the sizing guidelines of the website. Check the return policy of the website before you order.
