How to Get Free Upgrades at Hotels

If you are a person who enjoys frequent traveling, you may come to appreciate the benefits that often come with staying in hotels. Even though hotels often save upgrades for their special clients, there are subtle tactics you can try to treat yourself without adding cost to your stay.

Step 1

Join a hotel's free guest program to earn points on each stay. Establish a working relationship with a specific brand of hotel. Be loyal by choosing the same hotel each time you travel. Always be nice to the front desk clerks, as they will be the first ones to help you.

Step 2

Organize as many events as you are able to with the same hotel. Many times hotels will often reward those who bring business to their companies. You may be rewarded when you stay at the hotel or credit might be given for a later booking.

Step 3

Trade in your airline frequent-flier mileage for hotel upgrades. Many hotels have partnerships with airlines that offer certain upgrades when you redeem the airline's mileage points.

Step 4

Ask your travel agent or the hotel you call about any specials they may be offering. Many times hotels won't advertise certain specials when booking. But they may offer "book online" or "travel agent" specials. These must be asked for upon the initial call or booking.

Step 5

Ask the front desk clerk about availability when you check in. Ask if the hotel is expected to be full that night. If not, ask nicely to be upgraded to a better room. Do not be greedy when asking---for example, asking for a suite if your original room is only queen size. Be reasonable in your requests.
