How to Wash Gore-Tex

How to Wash Gore-Tex
Gore-Tex is a breathable, waterproof material which revolutionized the outdoor clothing and equipment industry. Since its introduction, and especially as the patent on Gore-Tex has expired, there have been many variations of the waterproof barrier introduced by other manufacturers to the market. As with any fabric, or article of clothing, there will most likely come a time when cleaning and washing is necessary. By following some simple steps, the integrity of the material may remain intact.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Washing machine Gentle detergent Dryer Iron Cloth
  • Washing machine
  • Gentle detergent
  • Dryer
  • Iron
  • Cloth
Step 1
Pre-treat any stains with a commercially available stain treatment such as Spray 'N Wash or other similar product. Follow the manufacturers instructions for application.
Step 2
Set a washing machine on the gentle cycle, and fill with warm water. Add mild liquid or powder detergent as indicated by the manufacturer.
Step 3
Add the Gore-Tex garment to the washing machine, making sure to evenly distribute the garment in the machine. Allow the garment to complete the full cycle of the wash, as this will remove all of the detergent and much of the water.
Step 4
Remove the garment from the washing machine, and place in a dryer. Use low heat only during the entire drying process. The heat from the dryer will help to restore the water repellency of the outer layer of the garment.
Step 5
Remove the Gore-Tex garment when dry. Make sure the item is completely dry. Use a warm iron to smooth any wrinkles from drying. Use a damp cloth between the garment and iron.

Tips & Warnings

Finish the process with a water-repellent spray or treatment, which is typically available at most outdoor and sporting goods stores. This should be applied to the outer layer of the garment.
