How to Downhill Bike

How to Downhill Bike
Downhill biking essentially requires a cyclist to control and maneuver his mountain bike while riding at high speeds down steep slopes and mountains. As with any extreme sport, proper gear should be used, including helmet, pads and mouth guards. Always obtain proper training before attempting to ride downhill and always participate in downhill races that offer medical staff and other trainer personnel should an accident occur.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:
  • Helmet
  • Knee and wrist pads
  • Mouth guard
Step 1
Use a mountain bike which is designed to roll over rocks and other large debris.
Step 2
Mount your bike. Wear gear at all times even when practicing.
Step 3
Approach your descent by relaxing your body. Keep your weight back and position your body so that it does not go over the handlebars.
Step 4
Allow the bike to increase in speed naturally as you descend the hill. Allow your front wheel to roll without applying much pressure.
Step 5
Keep right and left pedals even to sustain balance and increase your level of stability.
Step 6
Be cautious and slow your speed when traveling down tight curves. Lightly apply your breaks in advance of the curve and use a pumping technique rather than abruptly pushing down the brakes.
Step 7
Understand that it is important to keep a safe distance from other bikers to avoid a collision.

Tips & Warnings

Always wear a helmet.

Avoid hitting a hole, loose sand and gravel, a slick section of road or a patch of ice when traveling downhill.

Don't travel too closely to other bikers when descending a hill.
