How to Buy Campground Memberships

If you are an avid camper, then buying a campground membership may be just what you need. Just like purchasing a membership in any group or organization, it is important do your research ahead of time in order to obtain the best membership that fits your needs the most.

Step 1

Determine your preferences for criteria such as location, price, facilities, campground programs, nightly rates and other amenities that you would like to be included in your membership. Compile a list of places that you plan to camp and set a budget.

Step 2

Search for the campground systems you might be interested in. Have the list of places in front of you. Look up the campgrounds to see if they have the places that you want to visit. The American Campground Membership and KOA Campgrounds are good places to start with. They have informative websites that offer nationwide campground locations with discounted prices.

Step 3

Decide whether you prefer to purchase a private membership or a reciprocal membership. A private membership will allow you to stay for a fee at all of the parks in that system of campgrounds. You will typically have a park assigned as your "home park" where you will have more privileges. A reciprocal membership allows you to stay at private or a public campgrounds even when you don't have a membership in their park, as they will recognize your existing outside membership to your "home park." Happy Camper and Passport America are popular for their reciprocal memberships. Both membership have its advantages and disadvantages. Choose one that fits your traveling needs.

Step 4

Compare campgrounds based on your preferences and the amenities they offer. Look for amenities like showers, electricity, laundry facilities and a program of organized activities. Ask questions about the campground's security. You may find it helpful to read testimonials and to speak with current members of the camp. Arrange a visit to the park before purchasing a membership with them.

Step 5

Pick a membership that fits your allocated budget. Compare cost, restrictions and rules between memberships. The cost of campground membership varies but expect a range from $800 to $2,500. There will be other fees based on the frequency of your camping. Annual camping fee ranges from about $200 to $1,100.

Step 6

Bid or purchase the membership that you like. The seller will need your contact and payment information. Do not give them your information unless you are confident that it is a secure transaction. After the sale is finalized, you will be given your new membership number and all the documentation that you need to use the campground system.

Tips & Warnings

Ask whether reservations are allowed in the campground and if so, how far in advance can they be made.

Take the previous member's information for verification purposes and call the corporate headquarters so that you can learn more about the details of the membership that you are interested in.

Don't hesitate to contact the seller and ask for information or any additional documentation to verify the membership.

If you are buying a membership that was previously owned prepare to pay additional costs such as the transfer fee and any payments that was owed in that membership.

Examine the contracts carefully as there are cost, rules and regulations that you may disagree with.
