How to Adjust Trek Bicycle Bars

How to Adjust Trek Bicycle Bars
Adjusting Trek bicycle bars involves two separate but connected parts; the stem and the handle bar itself. By adjusting the stem, the handle bars may be raised or lowered as needed. The bars themselves may be moved or tilted to make holding them more comfortable and easy to hold. Both adjustments are performed using either an adjustable wrench or sockets and wrench.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bike Adjustable wrench or socket set
  • Bike
  • Adjustable wrench or socket set
Step 1
Loosen the bolt on the top of the handle bar stem with the wrench or socket to loosen the expander wedge in the tube. The tube extends into the frame of the bike and is held in place by a expanding wedge. Turn the bolt two to three turns to loosen.
Step 2
Firmly pull upward with slight twist to raise the bars. Make sure the tube is not raised past the mark on the riser tube as indicated by marked scoring on the tube.
Step 3
Realign the bars with the front wheel and tighten securely but do not over tighten.
Step 4
Loosen the bolts on the stem at the point where the handle bar is inserted. The stem connects the riser tube. Once again use the adjustable wrench or socket. Tilt the bar as needed and re-tighten the bolts on the stem.
Step 5
Recheck all points at which adjustments were made and make sure the bars are firmly in place and aligned with the front wheel of the bike.

Tips & Warnings

If there is uncertainty in making any type of adjustment to the handle bars of a Trek bike, then it is wise to seek a qualified bike mechanic to make such adjustments.

Failing to properly secure all adjustments may lead to loss of control when cycling and potential injury.
