How to Remove Paint From a Chrome Bicycle Frame

How to Remove Paint From a Chrome Bicycle Frame
Chrome bikes frames often come fully painted, but many riders actually prefer the look of the chrome to the original color. Whether you want to give your bike a new paint job, or uncover the chrome for a nice shine, you have to remove the old paint before you change your bike's look.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paint stripper
  • Cloth
  • Paint scraper
Step 1
Set up a well-ventilated room to remove the paint. You should have several windows open for cross-ventilation. If you are using a more toxic substance, such as aircraft paint remover, you might want to do this outside or in an open garage.
Step 2
Put on thick rubber gloves.
Step 3
Apply the paint remover with a brush. Make sure to apply a thick, uniform coating.
Step 4
Cover the stripper with a layer of saran wrap to keep it from drying out.
Step 5
Wait for as long as the directions on the stripper recommend. If you are using a mild, non-toxic paint stripper such as 3M Safest Stripper, you might have to wait longer than with a conventional aircraft stripper.
Step 6
Remove the saran wrap and wipe the stripper off with a cloth or paint scraper. The paint should come off. Use a second cloth to remove any leftover paint or residue.
