How to Create Your Own Trail Mix

How to Create Your Own Trail Mix
Trail mix is a great snack for hiking, running, biking or any activity that involves long periods of exercise. It is loaded with protein and carbohydrates that will fuel the body to last through arduous activities. By creating your own trail mix, you can avoid high contents of sodium and sugars common in store-bought varieties that will slow you down and cause dehydration. A mixture of nuts and dried fruit combine to make a healthful and great-tasking trail mix that everyone will enjoy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • 1 cup unsalted peanuts
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup dried apricots, chopped
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
Step 1
Combine peanuts, almonds, cashews, cranberries, raisins, apricot and dark chocolate chips in a large bowl.
Step 2
Mix together until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Step 3
Transfer trail mix into 1-qt. Ziploc bags for airtight storage and on-the-go servings.

Tips & Warnings

Add 1 cup of M&M's instead of dark chocolate chips for a sweeter mix.

Substitute other nuts and dried fruits to fit your tastes.

Triple the ingredients for bulk sizes.

If you have allergies to certain nuts--such as peanuts--or fruit, omit those ingredients from the trail mix.

If salted nuts are used in trail mix, chances of dehydration during exercise will increase.
