How to Return a Rental Car at the London Airport

Trail enthusiasts will definitely want to rent a car and explore the English countryside. London's Heathrow Airport has many of the car rental agencies familiar to travelers, including Alamo, Enterprise, Avis and National. Travelers can book their car online and catch a shuttle to the appropriate rental agency to pick up their car. But aside from the confusion of driving on the opposite side of the road, a common travelers' complaint involves the return process. Stressed travelers need a little extra guidance to make sure they return the rental car to the correct agency without getting lost on Heathrow roads. Once you've located the terminal, returning the car is as simple as dropping off your keys and waiting for the complimentary shuttle to your departure terminal.

Step 1

Request that the agent processing your reservation write down the location of the rental agency before you depart in your rental car. This may seem straightforward but, as of March 2009, signs at Heathrow Airport do not include the locations of specific car rental agencies in their list of terminals.

Step 2

If you have written down the appropriate terminal number to return the car, take a free copy of an airport map, available at most rental agencies. Use the map to help you navigate the roads upon your return trip.

Step 3

Note that most well-known car rental agencies, which the British call "car hires," can be found along Northern Perimeter Road. The exits for different terminals will take you to different spots along Northern Perimeter, with most car agencies accessible for exits for terminals 1 to 3.

Step 4

Exit the M25, the British highway that leads to London Heathrow, and follow signs for Terminals 1 to 3. Once you have exited, drive until you see your rental agency then pull in to the parking lot and find the easiest available spot.

Step 5

Return your keys to the agent inside and pay any necessary fees. Ask the agent where you should wait for the shuttle back to the airport's terminals.
