How to Purchase a Discount Amtrak Ticket

How to Purchase a Discount Amtrak Ticket
Amtrak is a railway company that services different areas of the country. Some examples of rail stations that have Amtrak departures and arrivals include New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle. Before you buy your Amtrak ticket, you may not realize that there is the potential to purchase discount Amtrak tickets. Discount Amtrak tickets can appeal to backpackers and vacationers who desire a cheap way to travel to their destination. You don't need to use a third party reseller to buy these tickets, but can receive them directly from the railway.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Find out if you qualify for a discount Amtrak ticket. The program is available to certain customers that meet the qualifications set by the company. Groups covered under the program include senior citizens, veterans, children, students and military personnel. Also, if you are a member of AAA or the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP), you can buy discount Amtrak tickets.
Step 2
Reserve your Amtrak tickets. If you want to make sure you have tickets for a certain date and time, you can make reservations online through the Amtrak website. You'll need to give your contact and trip details.
Step 3
Pick up your tickets at an Amtrak office. Prior to departure at the train station, you will need to pick up your reserved tickets. Let the ticketing agent know that you are interested in the discount program.
Step 4
Show proof that you are eligible for the discount tickets. For instance, if you want the senior discount (15 percent off retail), you need to have a valid ID that proves you are over the age of 62. Your payment will then be processed by the agent and you receive your tickets. Amtrak accepts cash as well as several major credit cards.

Tips & Warnings

Make sure you check the restrictions for the discount tickets. You can view the program details through the "Hot Deals" section on the Amtrak website.
