The Best Way to Organize a Fishing Vest

The Best Way to Organize a Fishing Vest
A fishing vest is a means for fishermen to carry a variety of baits, terminal tackle and accessories in an organized and convenient method. The organization of a fishing vest will often times depend upon the user and will vary greatly. However, there are some basic organization tips that can prove especially helpful to those new to the sport or searching for a better means.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:
  • Fishing vest Various equipment including baits, small tackle boxes, pliers, terminal tackle

Step 1
Begin by accessing the various pockets and observe the size and location. Keep in mind that when organizing a vest it will often times be necessary to place objects according to size. Determine what equipment needs a larger pocket and work down to the smaller pockets.
Step 2
Place fly or other smaller boxes in larger zip pockets. Avoid the temptation to pack the pockets full as this is a good way to loose valuable equipment. A pocket that holds a small tackle box will in most cases be accessed frequently. During the course of pulling the box out of the pocket it is possible to also pull out smaller objects which may become lost.
Step 3
Arrange tackle, gear and accessories by frequency of use. When fly fishing, for example, use easily accessed pockets for line cleaner, float-ant or other frequently used items. Tippet material is also good to keep handy as this will need to be changed more often.
Step 4
Utilize either a zip string or coil retainer for holding items such as scissors, line nips and small pliers. There are accessories designed for retainers that will accommodate small bottles and tubes such as fly float-ant and even lip balm. This is a great way to keep frequently used items handy and avoid digging in pockets.
Step 5
Keep fishing permits and license in an inside pocket for safe keeping. If an inner pocket is not available then use a pocket that is large enough to hold the license but is not frequently accesses. Consider carrying several small ZipLoc style bags as a water tight barrier for license, permits, wallets and other items.

Tips & Warnings

Take time when selecting a vest as there are many different styles from a variety of manufacturers. There are even vests designed specifically for seasonal use such as light weight mesh summer vests and insulated winter vests.

Consider the use of the vest carefully as a quality vest can potentially be expensive. This is as much an investment in fishing as a rod or reel; carefully consider the vest before purchase.
