Planning a travel adventure outside the United States requires the proper identification, including a U.S. passport. Begin the process of applying for a U.S. passport by downloading an application from the U.S. Department of State's website. Complete the application process several weeks before expected travel plans to prevent travel delays or ruined plans. Processing times for U.S. passports can vary, especially in summer and around the holidays. The U.S. Department of State recommends allowing 10 weeks for processing. Expedited services are available for an extra fee.

Step 1
Use a computer with an Internet connection to visit the U.S. Department of State website. Make sure the computer is connected to a printer. Open a web browser and enter the website for the U.S. Department of State. Or search for "Passport Application." Scroll to the bottom of the homepage and click passports, listed under the travel heading. This takes you to the U.S. Passport homepage.
Step 2
Choose the option that meets your needs. The U.S. Department of State website provides visitors with several options for passports. Select and click the category describing your passport need such as first time adult applicant, lost or stolen, renew a passport or change your name. Notice that there is a different category for minors under the age of 16.
Step 3
Verify that you meet the qualifications. Clicking takes you to the next window, where applicants can read the qualifications and requirements for submitting a passport application. Read the steps carefully to make sure to meet the criteria for the selected passport application. First-time applicants must submit form DS-11 in person, provide proof of U.S. citizenship, a primary identification with a photocopy, two passport photographs and the required fees.
Step 4
Complete form DS-11 online. Click the link that reads, "Complete Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport." This opens another window, providing the applicant with the option of completing the application online or printing the document. Click the button, "Complete Form DS-11 Online." This opens the application document for you to complete online. Print, using black ink and single-sided paper when completed. Do not sign the form until instructed by a passport agent.
Step 5
Print a blank Form DS-11. Click the button, "Print a Blank Form DS-11." A new window opens with the six-page document for printing. Print the document using black ink and single-sided, white paper. The last two pages of the document are the passport application. Complete the application legibly with black ink. Carefully read the other pages for further instructions.
