How to Cancel Airline Tickets

How to Cancel Airline Tickets
No matter how much time and effort you put into planning your hiking, camping or snow sports trip, sometimes life gets in the way. Natural disasters, health issues and even death are all common reasons that people have to change their travel arrangements. Whatever the reason, canceling your airline ticket is a simple process and only requires a short phone call. On the other hand, getting a full or partial refund can be quite the challenge.

Step 1
Gather your flight information. You can locate your flight information on your paper ticket, or find it on your e-ticket. If you purchased your ticket online, you should have been issued (and emailed) an e-ticket.
Step 2
Call whomever you made the flight reservation through. If you made it through the airline or a travel agent, call their customer service representatives (also known as ticket agents). If you booked the flight online, go back to the website and look for the "contact us" or "support" links. You will find their customer service number there.
Step 3
Give the ticket agent your name and flight information. You will need to know your flight number and the date/time your flight departs.
Step 4
Explain why you need to cancel your airline ticket. Many airlines will give you a full or partial refund if you have to cancel your flight due to circumstances out of your control. Hurricanes and a death in the family are just two reasons why credits are given.
Step 5
Finalize your cancellation. If you are receiving a full or partial refund, you may need to supply the booking agent with the credit card number you charged the flight on initially.

Tips & Warnings

Explaining why you need to cancel the flight, may lead to a full or partial refund. If the reason you cancel your flight is because of a death in the family, you may be required to supply the airline with a copy of the deceased's death certificate.
