How to Install a Rooftop Air Conditioner on a Camper

How to Install a Rooftop Air Conditioner on a Camper
After spending a decent amount of money on a rooftop air conditioner, you want to make sure it works as best it can. Follow these instructions to ensure you not only get the best performance possible out of your unit, but also that you install it safely. Please keep in mind that the exact specifics of installing a rooftop camper air conditioner will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:
  • Screwdriver
  • Packing material
  • Camper air conditioner
  • Generator (if needed)
  • Mounting bracket (if needed)
Step 1
Create or prepare the vent. Check to make sure your camper has a spot on its top to place an AC unit. This spot should be located directly over a roof vent. If there is no roof vent present, you will have to create your own vent. Consult other instructions on how to create a vent, and remember to unhook the battery before doing any cutting into your vehicle.
Step 2
Plan out the power route. This is the route from the generator or power socket to the air conditioner. It is best to plan this out ahead of time.
Step 3
Prepare and open up the vent opening. Unscrew the roof vent screws, and remove both the vent and its trimming materials. In addition, remove the caulking around the roof opening, and clean the surface. Make sure that no power is going into the air conditioner in order to avoid electric shock.
Step 4
Place the air conditioner on top of the vehicle, and then place it in the roof opening. It should fit snugly. If there is too much space, you may need to add more packing material (insulation, tubing, etc.) to hold it in place.
Step 5
Install the mounting frame. After letting the electrical conduit in the bottom of the air conditioner hang through the roof opening, it's time to install the mounting frame. A mounting frame should have come with your air conditioner. Place this over the air conditioner, and use its bolts to attach the frame to the roof.
Step 6
Wire your air conditioner to receive electrical current. The way you wire your air conditioner will vary depending on what model you have. You should not try to do the wiring yourself unless you have the experience and knowledge necessary to do so. Unqualified persons attempting to perform wiring installation jobs can be dangers to themselves.
Step 7
Install and turn on your generator to test your air conditioner. If you don't have one already, install a generator in your camper. Once the generator is up and running, test the wiring and the soundness of your roof vent to ensure your air conditioner is working properly. Turn the air conditioner on, and wait to see if it cools the vehicle. If so, your camper air conditioner is installed and ready to go!
