How to Plan a Universal Studios Vacation

How to Plan a Universal Studios Vacation
Universal Studios Florida is one of the most popular theme parks in the United States and the 11th-most visited theme park in the world as of 2009. A working production studio, it is also famous for rides and attractions including Shrek 4D, Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride and The Simpsons Ride. Universal Studios is located on International Drive, the hub of Orlando's entertainment district. There are more than 100 hotels in the area with a vast array of services and facilities for travelers. You'll find many options for flights, accommodation and activities during your Universal Studios vacation.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Decide how to get there. The most convenient airport to Universal Studios is Orlando International Airport (MCO), serviced by all the major U.S. airlines. Low-cost airliner Allegiant Air also flies into nearby Sanford International Airport (SFB.) If you are driving or renting a car, check parking charges at your hotel -- most hotels in the area offer free parking, but a few charge up to $25 a night.
Step 2
Find accommodation. Visitors to Universal Studios Florida often stay on International Drive, which provides easy access to all six Orlando theme parks. To be really close to the action, stay in one of the three Universal hotels: the Portofino, Hard Rock Hotel or Royal Pacific Resort. Guests at these hotels get front-of-line access at Universal Studios as well as free shuttle services to and from the hotel.
Step 3
Check for deals and discounts. UniversalOrlando.com offers park tickets, hotel rooms, and discount packages for Universal Studios Florida. Florida residents are eligible for discounted tickets, while both retired and active-duty military personnel qualify for one free ticket and discounted companion tickets.
Step 4
Know what to pack. You'll need essentials such as comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and bathing suit. It's also a good idea to bring a lightweight jacket, especially in the cooler months. Don't bring a large picnic lunch or a cooler -- they'll be confiscated on entry. If you want to buy a Universal Express Plus pass, which gives you priority access to rides and attractions, plan ahead -- only a certain number are issued each day, and they frequently sell out.
Step 5
Look beyond the park. Universal Studios is one of six theme parks on International Drive--check out Sea World, Discovery Cove, Wet n' Wild, Islands of Adventure and Aquatica Seaworld's Waterpark. Disney World is a 20-minute drive away. If you've had enough of theme parks, try Buena Vista Watersports for waterskiing or bass fishing on Orlando's Lake Bryan.
