Camping Cots Review

Camping Cots Review

What To Look For

Today's cots most often have steel frames and legs or aluminum reinforced legs. Look for a rust resistant coating for steel.

If you are planning to pack a cot in, check the weight. Most lighter cots average from 5 to 8 pounds, no small addition to your burden. Military cots can support larger people, up to 375 pounds, but they are built more sturdy and weigh more for it.

Tall people and those who need more width should pay attention to the listed dimension measurements. It may be difficult to find a cot sized larger than 84 by 32 by 9 inches (LWH).

Because the cover holds your body weight, it needs to be durable. Choose a cover that is washable, mildew resistant, water repellent and/or made from ripstop polyester.

Common Pitfalls

Cots with two or four legs or those lacking crossbar support may be more comfortable for people who usually find a bar under a hip or their back intolerable. You may trade away some stability with a two legged cot. Head and foot bars may add support but may cause taller sleepers discomfort.

Skip over accessories such as sewn in pillows or side pouches that provide little benefit, add to the cost and may actually get in the way of your comfort.

Where To Buy

Cabela's has stores in many states and also offers online shopping specifically for outdoorsmen and women. They carry most styles of camping cots.

Camping Gear Outlet has a large list of cots available for sale through their catalog or online ordering. Their website allows comparison shopping for cots.

Big box stores usually have a very limited supply of camping merchandise and it is often one size fits all. This extends to their online offerings as well. Cots are likely to be less expensive, but lower in quality and lacking any special features.

Cost

The cost of a camping cot ranges from $28 to $280. The extra money does not necessarily get you a better piece of gear. Shipping charges may depend upon weight and many cots run in excess of 10 pounds. Several also do not fold into a compact form, which may affect shipping costs due to the size of the package.

Insider Tips

Carry and storage bags are included in most cot purchases. Self-inflating mats are a great convenience item. The most exciting news in cots is the greater choice in design.

Extra low cots may fit smaller tents or help those who tend to roll out of bed at night, while taller cots offer storage space below.

There are bunk set cots available which can sleep two adults. Special needs cots have multiple head and foot positions, similar to a chaise lounge. Some even include mesh lofts which keep gear up off the floor. Cots with legs which can be independently positioned allow you to specifically adjust the cot height and comfort level to your body.
