Mongoose Mountain Bike Review

Mongoose Mountain Bike Review

What To Look For

Mongoose produces a line of moderately priced mountain bikes that are widely available at a variety of retail shops. Its mountain bike line is broken into dual-suspension, which is the largest individual segment; jumping (dirt jumpers); and hardtail XC. When it comes to dual-suspension models, Mongoose offers up to 210 mm of rear travel on downhill-oriented bikes such as the Boot 'R Team down to an adjustable 2 1/2 inches worth of travel on its lower-priced models. Though its bikes aren't categorized as "downhill," "all mountain" or "cross country," it would be easy to find a bike for those styles by comparing suspension, frame weights and components. Many of Mongoose's dual-suspension bikes use the FreeDrive frame, which helps to isolate the suspension and provide a smoother, "hardtail-like" climb while still taking care of big and small hits on downhills. Lower-end dual-suspension Mongoose bikes feature 6000 heat-treated alloy frames and hardtails feature 6061 aluminum frames. Dirt jumpers are crafted from CroMo or 6061 alloy, depending on the model. Components include forks from Rock Shox and Marzocchi, drive train pieces from SRAM and Shimano, and rear shocks from Rock Shox, Fox and Suntour. As far as sizing, each model has its own availability, but overall, Mongoose uses sizes XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL. Individual seat tube lengths vary by model.

Common Pitfalls

When shopping Mongoose bikes, make a list of what is most important to you and your riding style. Don't be sold by flashy specs such as huge amounts of travel if those aren't what you need. Mongoose offers a complete line of bikes from hit-devouring freeride/downhill bikes to mellow XC hardtails that will suffice on many cross-country rides. Buy the equipment that you'll make use of where you ride. Mongoose also offers a Commuter line for those seeking a bike for around town.

Where To Buy

Mongoose is part of the larger corporations of Pacific Cycle and Dorel Industries, along with other bike companies such as Schwinn. Therefore, Mongoose bikes are distributed widely and available at many retailers. You can find them at many bike shops and sporting good stores. The easiest way to find a dealer is to make use of Mongoose's "Find a Dealer" feature on the Mongoose website. If there is a specific model you're seeking, be sure to call ahead as not every model will be available at every authorized dealer.

Cost

Like bikes from any manufacturer, Mongoose mountain bikes range widely in price based on design and components. Dual-suspension models range from $650 up to $4,000 as of September 2009. Hardtail models are far more moderate overall and range from $470 to $670. Dirt jumpers range from $400 to $1,200.
