What To Look For

Tent camping is making a comeback because of its affordability and fun. Families can enjoy a vacation together for a fraction of the cost of a traditional outing, but getting started can be pricey. Usually the major expense in the necessities for camping is the tent. Walmart's Ozark Trail line of tents is affordable and a favorite among new campers. Price is always a consideration, but other factors should dictate your choice as well. Your tent should be waterproof, and the poles should be strong enough to withstand winds. Size is a factor, and so is whether it is freestanding or staked. Also consider the seasons you'll primarily be camping in. Summer and early fall tents don't need the weather and cold-resistant qualities of spring and winter tents.

Common Pitfalls

One common complaint about Ozark Trail tents is they are not waterproof. Although the packaging reads that they are weatherproof, it doesn't mean they will keep you dry in a storm. Another problem is the strength of the poles. Many people report problems with them snapping easily. Replacement poles are available through the website but not the stores.

Where To Buy

Ozark Trail tents can only be purchased at Walmart. The brand is manufactured by several companies, but purchase and replacement is handled by Walmart.

Cost

Ozark Trail tents are known for their affordability. Most models are well under $100 including a 9x6-foot tent that sleeps four and sells for $29.95. The three-room Vacation Lodge tent, sleeps up to 10 people and features divider curtains and a removable rain shield. It retails for $119.88.

Comparison Shopping

When compared with other tents, Ozark Trail is hard to beat in price. But Coleman tents are only slightly more and come backed by Coleman's century-old reputation. Northface and Eureka both carry highly rated tents that compare in size and features to Ozark Trail but at roughly twice the price.

Accessories

Walmart offers few accessories specifically for the Ozark Trail tents, although they do offer a line of cots, airbeds and sleeping bags. There are also several models of Ozark Trail canopies and camp chairs.

Insider Tips

If you are going camping with an Ozark Trail tent, heed the reviews and take a tarp and spare poles. As with any tent, before you go camping with it the first time, set it up to make sure you have all the parts and the tent is undamaged.
