Biking Shorts Review

Biking Shorts Review

What To Look For

From tight Lycra cycling shorts to loose-fitting mountain bike shorts, bike-specific shorts help to protect the rider, keep him comfortable and provide an increased boost in performance. Road cyclists generally prefer tight-fitting Lycra shorts, which stretch to fit the body. The Lycra material wicks moisture and keeps the rider more aerodynamic to improve speed. Also important is a Chamois pad, which is designed to protect from sores, chafing and general discomfort from sitting for extended periods. Leg grippers help to prevent the shorts from riding up your leg. Bib shorts, which attach over the shoulders, offer extra support. Multi-panel construction keeps the shorts tight to the body without requiring as much material stretching and prevents chafing. The more panels, the better the shorts should perform. Mountain bikers who don't need (or want) the cheek-hugging, aerodynamics of Lycra shorts can choose looser-fitting mountain bike shorts. These shorts often include integrated Lycra shorts with padding inside to combine the wicking and padding benefits of Lycra shorts with the style of loose shorts. Other things to look for on mountain bike shorts include zippered or strong velcro pockets, quick-drying shell and comfortable fit that allows for fluid movement without snagging or rubbing.

Common Pitfalls

Try on several pairs of shorts prior to purchase. Be sure that Lycra shorts are fully form-fitting. The chamois pad should properly encompasses your anatomy to offer full protection when seated--not all pads are designed exactly the same. Try sitting on your bike seat to ensure the padding fully protects. Be sure that the shorts are comfortable and allow for freedom of motion when pedaling.

Where To Buy

You can purchase bike shorts at a variety of retailers. It's best to shop in person to have the advantage of trying several pairs to find just the right fit. If this isn't feasible, be sure to verify that you can return the shorts in case they don't fit or aren't comfortable. Shop at a local bike shop or sports retailer with a bike department. Online, you can find bike shorts at retailers like Performance Bicycle or at more general outdoor sporting good retailers like Backcountry and REI.

Cost

Bike shorts range widely in price. Lycra shorts can cost anywhere from about $40 to $150. Baggy bike shorts will usually range from $50 to $100. Of course, if you shop during sales or closeouts, you can find prices below these ranges.

Insider Tips

Always be sure to wash your shorts regularly. Lycra shorts are designed to be used without underwear, so washing will prevent the build-up of harmful bacteria that can cause sores and discomfort. Carefully follow the care instructions.
