Pentax Binoculars Review

Pentax Binoculars Review

What To Look For

Pentax, long a leader in SLR cameras, also has an extensive line of sport optics for bird watching, hunting and traveling. Pentax has eight lines of binoculars and multiple models of each. When looking at a binocular, the first number (usually an 8 or 10, sometimes a 12 or 15) refers to the magnification. The second number (between 25 and 50) refers to the diameter of the lens barrel and will affect the brightness of the image.

The DCF NV series is a compact design and offers 8x36 and 10x36 models. The top model DCF ED line (8x32, 8x43, 10x43 and 10x50) has extra-low dispersion glass for better clarity, a durable magnesium alloy body and a waterproof construction. The DCF SP line (8x32, 8x43, 10x43, 10x50, 12x50) is a slight step down in price and performance from the ED line. The DCF WPII (8x42, 10x42) is a good all-around performer with waterproof construction. The DCF HRc is Pentax's entry-level line and has an 8x42 and 10x42 model. The DCF LV 9x28 is a good lightweight, waterproof model. The new DCF SW (8x25, 10x25) is a super compact model that good for travel, while the UCF WP (8x25, 10x25) is an ultra-compact waterproof model. Pentax also makes a basic UCF model 8x21.

Common Pitfalls

People shopping for binoculars too often get caught up in the numbers instead of checking out the optics. The optics have a significant effect on the clarity of the image and whether it is fatiguing to look through the binocular or not. While better optics cost more, they tend to last longer when cared for and give a much higher level of performance.

Where To Buy

Pentax binoculars are available at many camera shops. You can also buy them online at places such as B&H Photo (see Resources section).

Cost

The cost for some of the basic models, like the UCF R 8x21, is only $59. The DCF SW line start at $149. The DCF LV is $250, while the HRc line starts at $299. The WPII line offers models between $300 and $400. The SP line is $550 to $700, and the ED line is $900 to $1,100.

Accessories

Get a microfiber cleaning cloth to keep the lenses of your new sport optics clean.

The binoculars come with a carrying case and a neck strap.
