Guide to Buying SLR Cameras

What To Look For

If you're shopping for an SLR camera, then you'll want one with a fast shutter speed since you'll probably be using it outdoors. A faster shutter speed lets you take pictures quickly and doesn't pause or stop in between shots. This is especially important if you plan on taking pictures of wild animals that move quickly. You'll also want one with an automatic winder. Older cameras used a manual winder that forced you to slowly advance the film before taking another shot, but newer cameras do this automatically. If it's possible, also look for cameras that come with multiple lenses for longer shots.

Common Pitfalls

The biggest mistake you can make is spending too much for a camera that you won't use very often. These cameras are fairly heavy and can be bulky, which makes carrying one awkward. You also have to realize that digital SLR or DSLR cameras are highly popular and even photojournalists are now using this type. Many companies no longer make basic SLR cameras because the DSLR versions are so popular. You may have to shop around just to find one, since the bigger stores no longer carry the basic style.

Where To Buy

Shopping for an SLR camera is difficult, but there are still stores offering this type. Local camera stores are an excellent place to look because they often sell both new and used equipment at discounted prices. Rex TV & Audio in the Midwest offers SLR cameras, as does Samy's Camera Store in southern California. You can also look online at camera supply stores such as Ritz Camera, Porter's and BH Photo Video. View Camera and other magazines devoted to cameras are another place to find SLR cameras and accessories. You can often find advertisements in the back of the magazines from companies and and individual sellers.

Cost

The price of SLR cameras range from $300 to well over $3,000, with some vintage models commanding even higher prices. If you're unsure about the use you'll get out of the camera, try shopping for an older or used model. These cameras can cost less than $100 and you can even find deals online where the cameras cost around $50. You may not find all the features or options that you want, but it will give you a good base camera until you can afford another model.

Insider Tips

Always check the lens of the camera before you buy an SLR model. Some of the older models didn't come with a removable lens. If you do buy one with a removable lens, consider investing in a rangefinder lens. A rangefinder lens allows you to take photos from as far away as 100 feet and still look like you were standing right beside your subject.
