What To Look For

W.W. Grigg has been manufacturing fly rods since 1960 and currently offers three models. The IM6 Fly Rod is the top of the line, covering 4 to 10 weight fly lines, and is available in lengths from 6 feet to 9 feet 6 inches. Next is the GX Fly Rod, available in 3 to 8 weight models, with lengths from 6 to 10 feet, which covers many freshwater fly-fishing applications. The Vintage Glass series has the look of bamboo with the soft feel of fiberglass. These rods are available in a 5/6 line weight, with lengths of 8 to 9 feet.

Common Pitfalls

Grigg fly rods cover basic fly fishing applications; the company does not have rods long enough to handle large streams and lack the casting performance of high-end fly rods like Sage or Loomis. As with any fly rod, take care when using and traveling with longer rods. Be sure to watch for any overhead obstructions when fishing to avoid damaging the rod while setting the hook.

Where To Buy

W.W. Grigg has an excellent distribution network, as its fly rods can be found in 43 states and Canada. See Resources for a dealer near you.

Cost

The IM6 Fly Rods start at $111.95 for a 7 foot, 4 weight and go up to $192.95 for the four-piece 9 foot, 8 weight model. The GX Rods range from $60.95 for the 6 foot, 3/4 weight to $106.95 for the four-piece 6 foot 6 3/4 weight that comes with a rod tube. The Vintage Glass series has three rods, with pricing from $44.95 to $50.95. All prices current as of 2009.

Comparison Shopping

W.W. Grigg rods compare well to the White River available from Bass Pro Shops. Grigg rods are lower cost with comparable components such as wooden reel seats, cork handles and high modulus graphite blanks. Add the Grigg limited lifetime warranty, and these fly rods are a bargain for their price.

Accessories

W.W. Grigg offers several four-piece "travel" models that come with a rod tube, perfect for the fly fishing angler on the go.

Insider Tips

Since WW Grigg fly rods cost less than $200, fly fishing anglers can purchase several rods to cover multiple situations they may encounter on the stream. For example, the IM900-8 makes a fine streamer rod while the IM900-4 works wonders at presenting delicate dry flies.
