What To Look For

Cruiser bicycles, also known as beach cruisers, are made for leisure and transportation over relatively flat surfaces. Most cruiser bicycles use balloon tires, which are designed for full inflation at a low pressure. These tires usually also do not have the same heavy tread that can be found in off-road or heavy-duty bicycles, and are usually wider than mountain bicycle tires. Cruiser bicycles usually have a banana seat, which is a skinnier triangular-shaped seat than other bicycles. This longer, slimmer seat makes it easier for the rider to ride with an upright seating posture. Steel is the material usually used in the construction of a cruiser bicycle. This steel can range from carbon steel to alloys. Aluminum and carbon fiber can also be used. Steel is often used because it can be fairly inexpensive and provide a sturdy, long-lasting frame that keeps its shape. Cruiser bicycles are usually single-speed. Many women like cruiser bicycles because of their fun and colorful styling. Some have a white stripe or come in bright colors such as red and baby blue. The laid-back, retro-styling of cruiser bicycles give a fun, retro twist to a highly functional bicycle that is perfect for leisure riding with family or errands around town.

Common Pitfalls

Because cruiser bicycles are not made for mountain biking and trail riding, many women who enjoy these activities might not like them. Additionally, women's cruiser bicycles are usually more expensive than a mountain bike because of their unique styling and heavy steel construction. Although many seats have gotten more comfortable since the 1950s when cruiser bicycles became popular, many women still might not like a cruiser bike's hard, firm seat. But this can be fixed by replacing the seat with another one or by placing a gel-filled cover over the original seat.

Where To Buy

The best quality cruiser bicycles can be found in specialty bicycle stores that are dealers of major manufacturers. Sporting goods and large retail chains usually carry cruiser bicycles for women, but their selection might not be as diverse as a specialty store. Buying a bicycle from a physical store is usually better than buying online because it can be taken for a "test-drive" first.

Cost

Women's cruiser bicycles vary greatly in price, from $70 to $600 as of September 2009. This price relies directly on where the customer is purchasing the bicycle from. Large retail outlets are usually cheapest, whereas specialty stores will be the most expensive.
