Garmin GPS Watch Review

Garmin GPS Watch Review

What To Look For

Garmin offers a variety of high-quality, performance GPS watches that feature data computation for sports like running and bicycling. Their Forerunner series contains a number of different watches at different price points.

HotFix--A proprietary feature of Garmin GPS watches that seeks to provide a quick satellite fix and maintain the signal even in the presence of overhead obstacles like trees and buildings.

ANT+ technology--Allows the Forerunner to connect wirelessly with accessories such as foot pod and cadence sensor. Also transfers data wirelessly to your computer.

Wireless sharing feature--Allows you to share your data with other Garmin users.

Courses Feature--The courses feature allows you to compete against former workouts to increase pace and heart rate.

Virtual Partner--Allows you to race against a virtual competitor.

Waterproof--The Forerunner 310 XT is waterproof up to 50 meters and is the choice for those seeking to get swimming data. Other Forerunner watches meet the IX7 water resistance standard.

Heart Monitor--Some of Garmin's Forerunner watches such as the 405CX and Forerunner 305 include heart rate monitors. Others are compatible with optional add-on heart monitor.

Models--Garmin GPS watches include the Forerunner 310 XT, Forerunner 405 CX, Forerunner 405, Forerunner 305 and Forerunner 205.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid the temptation to overbuy. While Garmin's watches offer numerous useful functions, the only functions that should matter to you are the ones that you actually need and plan to use. Don't spend extra money on advanced functions unless you can actually foresee using them. Save yourself money by purchasing the Garmin GPS watch that most closely matches your intended use.

Where To Buy

Garmin is a leading name in GPS and GPS-based sport watches. Forerunner watches can therefore be found at a variety of locations including Backcountry and REI. They're also available at electronics retailers like Best Buy and general retailers such as Walmart.

Cost

Garmin watches range in retail price from $199.99 to $369.99. The entry-level Forerunner 205 retails for about $199.99, the Forerunner 305 and 405 for about $299.99, the Forerunner 310 XT for about $349.99 and Forerunner 405 CX for about $369.99.

Accessories

Foot pod--Allows you to use your Garmin Forerunner GPS watch to monitor your performance indoors where GPS is unavailable.

Cadence Sensor--Turns your Forerunner into a bike computer to monitor bike-based speed and distance.
