Snowboarding Boot Review

Snowboarding Boot Review

What To Look For

Snowboarding boots are integral to control and performance on your board. Take the time to shop for features, fit the boots properly and pick out a pair that really work well for you. Wear your snowboarding socks when trying them on.

Size--Your shoe size is a good guideline for your boot size. If you fall between sizes, size down for boots as they'll stretch over time.

Fit--Hands down the most important aspect of the boot is correct fit. Snowboard boots should fit closely to your feet not allowing your feet to swim. You shouldn't experience any heel lift when leaning forward and your toes should just touch the toe box in front. On the other hand, they shouldn't pinch or squeeze your feet.

Stiffness--Boots should have the proper amount of support for your style. For park, pipe and general freestyle, more flexibility is a positive. Freeride, backcountry and racing require stiffer boots.

Moldable Liners--Can be heated to fit all those special nooks and warts on your feet so that they more closely secure around your feet.

Speed Lacing--Replaces conventional boot laces and allows for easier, quicker tightening that makes the boots tighter.

BOA System--Uses cables in place of laces and a simple knob. Turn to tighten and press button to release.

Zone Lacing--Available for speed systems and BOA, allows for individual tightening of the forefoot and upper boot. Makes for a more customized, comfortable fit.

Women-Specific--Designed specifically for women's feet, which are typically narrower.

Common Pitfalls

While snowboard boots are the least glamorous piece of gear that you'll buy, they are the most important. Be as thoughtful with your snowboard boot purchase as you are with your board and bindings. Never size up when it comes to boots. While this is tempting if your foot is still growing, a large, loose boot won't provide full control of the board. This will cause obvious problems and make snowboarding difficult to learn. Many children's boots include adjustable sizing to accommodate some growth.

Where To Buy

It can't be stressed enough that you should always try your boots on before you buy them. For the best selection of quality boots, shop at a snowboard shop. Sporting good stores may also stock snowboard boots, though they tend to be lesser-quality. When buying online, always consider the return policy so that you can exchange your boots should they fit improperly. Luckily, many major retailers that sell snowboard boots offer excellent, hassle-free returns. Some good examples are Backcountry and REI.

Cost

Like all snowboarding equipment, boots range widely in price. Beginners should opt for less-expensive, less-stiff boots. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 retail for new boots. It's not difficult to find sales, particularly toward the end of the season and in the off-season so you can shave some money off these prices if you shop wisely.
