Review of Running Tights

Review of Running Tights

What To Look For

Running tights should provide a perfect combination of shield and screen door, allowing sweat to wick away from your skin while protecting you from the elements. Features to consider include reflective lines to make you more visible to cars, mesh panels for breathability and a convenient pocket for MP3 players or keys. Of course, fit is the most important element in a good pair of running shorts. In addition to elastic that helps keep tights snug to your body, many running tights have zippers to adjust fit, mesh panels or ankle tightness.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid Lycra running tights. While early running tights were made of Lycra, subsequent generations have used Lycra in combination with other synthetic materials. Many models of running tights include an additional thermal layer, such as fleece. However, unless you intend to run in cold winter weather, you probably don't need lined tights. Running tights are designed to keep muscles warm, so extra insulation is usually not necessary.

Where To Buy

Buy running tights in a specialty store, such as a running store, outdoor outfitter or online specialty retailer. For a beginning runner, the distinctions between tights can be subtle, so it's good to have an expert who can help you choose the best options.

Cost

Running tights are remarkably specialized pieces of equipment, which often come at a premium price. The cheapest tights start at about $60. More typical prices are $80 to $120.

Comparison Shopping

Look for a combination of features that meet your specific needs. Zippers are one of the biggest variable elements. Some tight models have zippers on the back to make them easier to remove, while others have zippers that open breathable mesh. However, when comparison shopping, the choice typically comes down to best fit.

Accessories

Running tights are just one element of a full running outfit. Also important are good running shoes, moisture-wicking socks and a "breathable" shirt.
