What To Look For
The first thing you'll want to note with zoom binoculars is how much they zoom. Ranges generally fall from 8 to 30, with an objective lens that usually has a diameter of either 25 or 50 millimeters. Larger diameters will let in larger amounts of light. You also want to note how the zoom works, if it has quick, automatic focusing and zoom features or a slow, manual process. Also note the size, bulkiness and weight of the zoom binoculars and if they will be comfortable for you to use and carry during the activity for which you will use them. Extras are the final things to note as many come with objective lens and eyepiece covers, cases and neck straps while others do not.
Common Pitfalls
Zoom binoculars with the most powerful zoom lenses will also be the heaviest and often the bulkiest. Some very powerful zoom binoculars may also become unstable or difficult to focus at their highest capacity. Look for a set that has a tripod adapter so you can attach a tripod, if feasible, when using the higher power viewing. Some of the lightweight models may not be comfortable or small enough that the eyepiece nearly touches the eyeball, a wholly uncomfortable feel. One more caveat is making sure the binoculars are easy to grip and adjust, perhaps with rubber coatings if you will be using them for an activity during which they can easily slip from your hands.
Where To Buy
Stores specializing in hunting and camping equipment and outdoor activities are a good bet for zoom binoculars. These include Cabela's and Bear Basin, either online or on location. More online options include Binoculars.com, OpticsPlanet.net, and sites like Amazon.com where you can find competitive pricing. Some of the major department stores may have the most basic and inexpensive zoom binoculars, but they will not be of the highest quality. Make sure to test the binoculars prior to purchase or buy from a place with a reasonable return policy in case you stumble upon one of the common pitfalls.
Cost
At some of the competitive, online sites, zoom binoculars can be found for as low as $100. They go up drastically from there, with many falling between $150 and $300, with the highest end models zooming above $700 or more.
